The Puerto Viejo Area and Getting Here

Nearby activities include snorkeling, diving, surfing, bicycling, fishing, kayaking, hiking in the reserve or national park.   Check out a full list or tours and activities for the area.

Puerto Viejo has a huge international selection of restaurants. Check out the listings here.

Browse the Puerto Viejo Satellite Map for more info on the area.

There are 4 public buses per day linking Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Limon, and San Jose. From Puerto Viejo center, it's a 5 minute taxi ride to us. There are also several shuttle companies which offer door to door service from most hotels in San Jose and Arenal directly to Banana Azul, right next door. Click here to make a shuttle booking request. The shuttle companies have Banana Azul right next door as a drop-off spot so put that in your reservation request for shuttles.

Schedules for buses as well as driving instructions, private and shared tourist shuttle bookings and all sorts of detailed info on getting to the area can be found here

One really memorable way to get here from San Jose or Arenal is to take a whitewater rafting trip. They'll pick you up at your hotel in the morning, bring you on a day of adventure and then drop you off at our driveway at the end of the day. And since the rafting location is halfway between San Jose and Puerto Viejo your day is spent in fun not in transit!

If you want to get here straight off your international flight, consider hiring a van and driver that will meet you at the airport and bring you right here.

I would recommend Casa Las Brisas to anyone wanting to visit this area of the country. Michele and his small staff made sure our stay was stress free, safe and relaxing. Michele can provide great recommendations for places to eat and took the time to answer my many many questions! The location is perfect, now that I have been to Peurto Viejo I am thankful that we didn't choose to stay in town. You can walk to town in 25 mins or rent a bike at Banana Azul for only a few dollars. Overall an incredible experience - Merci Michell & Ola Oscar! Very tasty home cooked breakfast too!

Was by far the best place we stayed in Costa Rica. Planned/booked 4 days but stayed 6 days. The BB itself is perfect situated on the beach, quite, and still close to town and to facilities of Banana Azul next door. However, the service and the host, Michel, was outstanding. With two teenagers, you might be worried if this was too quite and boring - but not at all. Bondfire on the beach at night, and any assistance for activities, and not to forget the special breakfasts made the stay unforgetteable for us. Rie & Jan / Denmark

My husband and I scoured the Internet looking for an affordable, but amazing week long honeymoon/anniversary vacation. We came across Banana Azul and Casa Las Brisas via Trip Advisor for a must vacation destination that wouldn't break the bank. We booked two nights at Casa Las Brisas and the remaining nights at Banana Azul.

As soon as we arrived at Casa Las Brisas, Michel and Oscar rolled out the red carpet and treated us like VIPs. They showed us to our quaint, private room overlooking a bright blue ocean that continuously showered us with a cool and refreshing breeze. Our room was spacious, clean and very romantic. In the mornings, the smell rising to our room of Michel's banana bread and coffee tickled our senses awake. For our anniversary night, Michel and Oscar pleasantly surprised us with champagne and chocolate covered fruit. They also helped my husband organize a special dinner at a local restaurant. During the day, they hung hammocks on the beach for our comfort/lounging pleasure. Michel and Oscar were also a wealth of knowledge about restaurants, activities, good wines, etc.

The service was impeccable and the hospitality was unforgettable. I definitely give Casa Las Brisas 5 STARS. Michel and Oscar really contributed to the ambiance of our whole experience. My husband and I missed them so much after we left Casa Las Brisas that we went back a few nights for the most enjoyable, fun-filled, entertaining, and intellectually stimulating happy hours I have ever attended. The bonefire they built on the beach for one of our happy hours was the icing on the cake!

Thank you Michel and Oscar for everything, we never imagined that we would meet such special people!

We had an OUTSTANDING trip in Costa Rica and really enjoyed our 3 nights at Las Brisas. The 4 "chicas locas" had many laughs and good times staying here. Having the link with Banana Azul and its added amenities is a bonus. Michel and Oscar are absolutely delightful and so accomodating! They took great care of us city slickers staying in the jungle. It is a rustic and simple place, but clean. It sits on the edge of the beach and at night the sounds of the ocean and wild life are amazing. Mucho Gracias to Michel and Oscar!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Casa Las Brisas during the first 3 nights of our stay in Puerto Viejo, Banana Azul was closed for refurbishment...
What more can I say or add to the other guest's great feedbacks and comments of this wonderful B&B!!!
Michel and Oscar made us feel at home from the very minute we arrived, a nice glass of red wine was awaiting us as welcome drink on the terrace...
...comfortable rooms, big terrace with a calm & soft ocean breeze, private hammocks on the beach for our afternoon naps, fresh homemade breakfasts...
We had a fabulous time and we highly recommand Casa Las Brisas if you go to Puerto Viejo!

Merci, gracias, thank you Michel, Oscar and Zeena for such a memorable stay at your place...

What are people saying about us?Marc & Summer Meyer from Rancho Cucamonga, CA, USA     June 15, 2009

Our honeymoon at Casa las Brisas could not have been more perfect or romantic. The place is clean, beautiful, and right on the beach. Great service and hospitality, perfect breakfast, and a perfect stretch of nearly private beach. Michel only has two rooms, so no crowds like other places. I can't express our love of this place enough. Next to Banana Azul, so you can use their facilities and tour agency if you like...but Casa las Brisas is no step-child to banana azul - the secret is that it's better.

Michel is an incredible host and a warm friend. He took us under his wing and made our trip extremely enjoyable. He is the best and we would recommend him in a second!

My husband and I stayed at Casa Las Brisas over the Easter Holiday as Banana Azul was booked. It was fabulous and I can't wait to go back.

Not only is Michel a wonderful host but every morning he prepares a homemade breakfast this is scrumptious. My personal favorite is the french toast.

This B&B is a diamond in the rough and we will be back.

Thanks Michel for such a memorable vacation. I miss you and Zeena.

My friend and I ended up being moved to Casa Las Brisas when our room at Banana had problems, and this truly made our vacation.

Our room was beautiful, as is the rest of the house. We did not get a chance to enjoy the kitchenette that the two rooms share, but next time we stay there, we intend to. We did take full advantage of the beautiful deck, sitting and reading in the afternoon nearly every day, enjoying the breeze coming off the beach. We also spent a lot of time enjoying Zeena, Michel's adorable pup.

Michel is the consummate host and innkeeper and is one of the most wonderful people I have met in my travels. Not only is he a great resource, able to recommend the perfect restaurant and helping you to arrange transportation wherever you need to go; he is warm and gracious and welcomes you like an old friend. You could not hope for a more charming, amiable host.

I enthusiastically recommend Casa Las Brisas if you are traveling to Puerto Viejo. You will leave part of your heart there.

Michel, we miss you and Zeena - Next time, we're definitely going to Elena Brown's ;-)

What are people saying about us?Tracy from Raleigh, NC     April 08, 2009

My friend and I visited Puerto Viejo in March and originally had booked Banana Azul. Unfortunately, there were issues with the room that needed to be fixed so they moved us to Casa Las Brisas since they were booked solid. This was the best thing that could have happened to us!

The home is absolutely beautiful and so comfortable. The room we had was so spacious and since there wasn't anyone else staying there it was like our own private paradise! The wrap around deck is the perfect place to relax, read a book, and take in the gorgeous ocean views. The beach is right at your feet and is very secluded and private.

By far though the best thing about Casa Las Brisas is Michel. Michel is the wonderful gentlemen who runs this B&B and the most gracious host we have come in contact with. He was there every morning to greet us with a smile and made us feel so comfortable. He is a great source for places to eat in town and will never steer you in the wrong direction. Michel also has some help with his hospitality in the form of the house mascot - Zeena. Zeena is Michel's wonderful puppy that is always happy to greet you upon your arrival at the home. Being an avid animal lover and missing my own dog on this trip, it was great to have her there and just added to the home-like feeling.

I would highly recommend Casa Las Brisas for your stay in Puerto Viejo. You will get amazing accomodations but even more importantly fantastic service from Michel. My friend and I have already decided we are returning next March and without a doubt we will be staying at Casa Las Brisas.

Thank you Michel for being such a gracious and wonderful host. We will never forget you, Casa Las Brisas or this trip! YOU ARE THE BEST!
